Grapes: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier
Tasted 'blind' in a line-up of inexpensive champagnes (as well as one Grande Marque) this showed remarkably well, coming out as a clear winner. Bright, light and very fresh, this is an easy drinking 'aperitif' champagne with a very good finish. The Universelle cuvée comes from 7 different villages in the Marne Valley and has a rare blend - heavily dominated by Pinot Meunier (65%) with 30% Chardonnay and 5% Pinot Noir. The Baron family then age this for nearly 4 years in the cellar before release. This is impressive fizz, properly made at this small, family domaine that offers exceptional value.
